PJ Opens Workshop on Leadership Skills

The Principal Judge Dr. Flavian Zeija, today, opened a one-day training ceremony for Judges of the High Court and members of Senior Management on leadership skills at the Supreme Court Building Conference Hall.

The training was organized by the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) and is aimed to enhance leadership skills among participants.

The Principal Judge noted that a leader is anyone who inspires, influences and guides in times of need. "Leadership is about people and their needs. It's about building relationships based on trust, respect, and empathy. Great leaders have the ability to understand people and their needs," he said.

He went on to define Leadership as the ability of an individual or a group of people to influence and guide followers or members of an organization, society or team."Leadership often is an attribute tied to a person's title, seniority or ranking in a hierarchy. However, it's an attribute anyone can have or attain, even those without leadership positions. It's a developable skill that can be improved over time," the Principal Judge observed. 

He emphasized that a leader should unite, inspire and motivate people to achieve their goals and ultimately live a meaningful life.

Justice Zeija highlighted the 10 essential leadership qualities necessary for success, which include vision, communication, empathy, integrity, decisiveness, resilience, courage, creativity, empowerment, and service to others.

Justice Damalie N. Lwanga, the Executive Director of the Judicial Training Institute noted the need for effective leadership in today's global environment. 

She stated plans to instutionalize leadership training as an annual event for all Staff of the Judiciary.

Justice Lwanga pointed out that participants will be equipped with skills required for their unique leadership roles.

She thanked the Judiciary administration for providing funds for the workshop.

Participants were taken through Transformational Leadership for Sustainable Growth of Institutions by Dr. Kiiza Kenneth Alfred, a Senior Lecturer Uganda Management Institute, Senior Counsel Ruth Sebatindira and Member of Judicial Service Commission made a presentation on Best Practices of Leadership and Organizing Professional Events. Prof. Wasswa Balunywa shared insights on the Art of Chairing Sessions and Making Presentations, while Dr. Henry M. Onoria made a presentation on Rapporteuring and Extracting Resolutions and Recommendations.
